WordPress: When is the_excerpt not quite the_excerpt you expect?

FYI => Perhaps it’s just me, but when I ask for something that’s what I expect to get. Nothing more, nothing less. If not, then I need to know otherwise.

In short, WordPress’ the_excerpt is more like the_content_if_there_is_no_excerpt. Or perhaps if_no_excerpt_then_the_content. At the very least, shouldn’t the fallback / default be an $args?

The thing is, there’s nothing (as of this moment) in the Codex that spells this out. Luckily after wrestling in the dirt with this for too long a trusted colleague gave me the 411.

The next time someone says, “Open source is free,” ask them how much they value their time.
