WordPress plugin fame & fortune

Consumed => “Pros and Cons of Developing Plugins While Hosting them at the WordPress Repository” by Vladislav Davidzon on Speckboy.

=> My value add (i.e., left a comment)…

Speaking for myself, one of the things (read: cons) that has kept my plugins out of the WP repository is support. Granted, (as far as I know) it isn’t required but it hardly seems fitting to push something out with my name on it and not be responsible and accountable for it.

That said, I’m not interest in answering – and I have seen such questions in the WP plugin forums – things like, “How do I change the color of the font?” Yes, I get it. We all have to start somewhere. That’s not my concern. My fear is if I’m not responsive to that person and that question they’ll make an effort to bad-mouth me as well as my plugin.

I think WordPress and Open Source are great ideas. But I’m not going to volunteer my work and then be unnecessarily sacrificed for my generosity. No thank you.

Finally, I’d like to suggest you / Speckboy do two more parts to this article and make it a mini-series. In one explore the best practices of using the repository. What to do, what not to do, etc. And in the other the BPs for not going the WP repository route.
