WordPress, custom post types and taxonomies

Answered => “What are the best options in WordPress to create smart widgets that fetch content based on user choices?” on Quora.

While I like Stuart Starr’s answer I’d also like suggest you consider using taxonomies and register that/those across all post types.

Off the top of my head…

You could have different custom post types for each type of media/content. And then have an Artist taxonomy. When you render a page for a particular artist you can pull from each post type what you need by taxonomy. In this way you could have links for “All Video By Artist ___” and “All {custom post type} by Artist ____” and so on.

Depending on your media/content requirements you might actually be able to use a single custom post type called (for example) Media and then use a second taxonomy called Media Type. There are ways to query by multiple taxonomies such that you could specify the Artist and then by particular media types. The advantage here is you could have a page of “All Media By Artist ____” or “All Media ____” but still do “All Media Type ____ by Artist _____”.

And yes, there might be a role for custom fields as well.

Justin Tadlock has a couple good blogs posts that’ll help:

You might also want to take it all a step further and have a Band Members taxonomy which would be the individuals. With this you could tie people to artists/projects. For example, Person Y does a guest vocal on band X
s album.

It might take a bit to wrap your head around taxonomies. In short, categories and tags are taxonomies. Taxonomies are just an easy way to classify things and then “query” on those same values.

This might be helpful as well:

btw, while this is all doable in WP if it were my project I would also give serious consideration to doing it in ExpressionEngine. I find the level of control and granularity with EE to be a less cumbersome than WP.
