Why move to The Cloud?

Consumed => “Thinking About Moving to the Cloud? There Are Trade-Offs” by David H. Freedman on NY Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/business/smallbusiness/what-to-consider-when-thinking-about-moving-to-the-cloud.html

One benefit hinted at but not directly mentioned is that most cloud services are based on a pay-as-you-go model. First, this allows for a low cost or no cost try before you buy window. Second if you have to scale up or down you’re only on the hook until the end of the month. Imagine buying hardware and software for a special project and then having the client go under mid-stream. If you’re on a month to month for as much as possible the sting is probably going to be less. Or let’s say to have an idea for a business you want to explore. With the cloud you don’t have to go “all in”.

The cloud isn’t always the answer but in terms of flexibility—and these are certainly agile times—it’s hard to imagine a better solution.
