Why Anchor Text Matters in SEO

Consumed => “How can a site rank for keywords that aren’t anywhere on its pages?” on Google Webmaster Help channel on YouTube.

Anchor text is the text you click on to trigger a link. Google also looks at that text and uses it too to evaluate and rank pages. This is why you should also use anchor text within your own site. It’s a good and easy way to associate additional terms with the receiving page.

For example, you’ll see it done (poorly) by a lot of web designers. They’ll put Web Design: MyFirm Inc. in the footer. With MyFirm Inc being the anchor text. What they should do is wrap the whole of it in the link so that Web Design is in the anchor text and also gets associated with their web site in Google’s brain.

Simple and per this Google video, smart as well.

BTW, how much the title= might also count, I’m not sure. But just to be safe I’d use the title= within the link’s HTML as well. This site does. It’s just that those links are styled to look just like the normal text so you only notice them if you look closely.
