Business Consulting For The 21st Century Via A Holistic & Intelligent Approach

“What would Steve Jobs do?”

Answered => “Does Steve Jobs deserve criticism for his lack of public philanthropy?” on Quora.

=> My answer…

Thanks for asking. I’ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Mine is strictly the personal opinion of a human being and citizen who just so happens to be a PC user. For the record, I am ultimately platform/tool agnostic but like many a creature of technology habit.

Apple Inc’s Apple vs PC ads rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, take the piss out of the PC if you want. However, hitting the philanthropic Bill Gates like that was in bad taste. Wake up Apple, philanthropy is cooler than any technology you can ever dream up.

Moi? If I were Gates, Microsoft & Co. I would have countered with a “leaked” parody ad that showed Gates giving away tons of money and Jobs standing there with a vacuum cleaner. Ear buds in, of course.

Apple would have been wiser to run pro-Gates ads congratulating Bill & Melinda on their charitable efforts (i.i.e, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.) Then close with a bumper “$5 of every iPod and iPhone will be donated to _____”. Odd? Against the cliche marketing grain? You betcha! That’s exactly why they should have done it. I say this because…

I you believe in Karma then one can’t help but wonder if Mr Steve Jobs isn’t now paying for slugging Gates below the belt like that.

Finally, to directly answer the question…

Yes, he does. Mum always said, “Actions speak louder than words.” Jobs’ actions in this area certainly reinforce his reputation as a self-centered “leader”. Maybe he doesn’t walk on water after all? I’m not so sure the world would be a better place if kids where taught to ask, “What would Jobs do?”
