Web dev and browser compatibility

Question => “As a web-based startup, which browsers should we create compatibility for?” on Quora.

http://www.quora.com/As-a-web-based-startup-which-browsers-should-we-create-compatibility-for

=> My answer…

It depends.

Who is your target market? What is the nature of the product/service? When do you expect to launch? What would estimate the browser adoption mix to be in that time frame? And possibly projected forward a bit? Is mobile an issue? Will it be? Where is your market – local, national or international?

All these are going to effect your decision. The overall browser usage/adoption mix might not correlate to your specific project/brand. For example, is someone on IE6 likely to be someone who’s going to want to buy what you’re selling? If not, I’d ignore IE6. Build for the sweet spot and keep in mind we are in a transition period right now in terms of browsers and markup technologies.

If possible, set up a coming soon page and keep an eye on your Analytics. Granted, the mix of those visitor could be significantly different from your post-launch mix. None the less, it might be worth looking at.
