There’s a thin line between staying relevant and cranking out crap

Consumed => “Writer’s Cramp: In the E-Reader Era, a Book a Year Is Slacking” by Julie Bosman on NY Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/business/in-e-reader-age-of-writers-cramp-a-book-a-year-is-slacking.html

=> Three quick thoughts:

1) There’s a thin line between staying relevant and cranking out crap. Or at least one would hope. Perhaps as we consume more our ability to judge and/or care about quality diminishes?

2) Perhaps I’m reading to deeply between the lines, but when the publishers say, “We need more content from you to promote you,” aren’t they also saying, “Look at it this way, you actually need us less. We’re not really adding much value”?

3) What about changes in the model of production? What if books were a chapter per month, wouldn’t that help keep the pipeline full? Or what about the fashion house model where multiple people are creating but someone has the final say? Why can Calvin Kline “create” something as his own (even if it was someone else) but Steven King can not?
