The truth is multitasking is overrated

Consumed => “Productivity, Multitasking, and the Death of the Phone” podcast interview of Sherry Turkle on HBR.

http://blogs.hbr.org/ideacast/2011/03/productivity-multitasking-and.html

Featured Guest: Sherry Turkle, MIT professor and author of “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other.”

It’s a quality vs quantity issue, isn’t it? Do more? Or do better? It’s interesting that she mentions how the downward cycle feeds itself. That is, we ask questions we get immediate responses to, and we respond—optimal or not—in kind.

FWIW, I noticed the flaw in multitasking when I was the owner of Planet X. Defining a specific task for staff and being able to focus on that was far more effective than saying, “Here, juggle these three or more balls.”
