I don’t have examples handy. I hope that’s ok. I will say, it should be obvious the process is short and simple.

With that said, I personally get frustrated (read: highly annoyed) with the whole “free sign-up” pitch and not much more. If a site can’t take the time to clearly explain what it does *and* why it should matter to me, then I typically don’t have the time to figure that out on my own either. I’m busy. Make me want to sign-up because I should and not because I’ve got nothing better to do. Turn-off and deal breaker in my book.

Soapboxing aside, I don’t see this as being a cookie cutter, OSFA answer. What you’re asking for is how best to increase conversions. That’s best addressed with A/B testing, multi-variable testing, etc. It quite possible different types of visits – for example, your examples – are going to have different motivations and therefore require different messages.

In short…test, test and keep in testing.
