The myth that SEO is like a loaf of bread

Answered => “What SEO plugins are there for e-commerce WordPress sites? on Quora.

http://www.quora.com/What-SEO-plugins-are-there-for-e-commerce-WordPress-sites

=> My answer…

Yes Yoast’s, obviously. That will handle the heavy lifting. However, I think it’s worth nothing that the tool is only going to be as effective as the strategy, level of understanding and time commitment behind it.

One good example is the site’s structure also plays a significant role in Google’s willingness to connect searcher with content. If one site has a Services page that combines 5 services, and another site has 5 pages, each dedicated to a service, and then someone searches for one of those services, (all things being equal) Google’s philosophy is to favor the page that is dedicated to the service. Which makes sense.

While it probably doesn’t apply to most of the audience of this thread, I did feel it was an appropriate opportunity to dispell the myth that SEO is like a loaf of bread. That is “Go get me some SEO” is not the right way to do SEO. Nor is it reasonable to expect best practices results when SEO is treated as such.
