The myth of technology as a panacea

Coming from the non-finance (read: technical) side of the house I’d like to suggest you send this to every CIO you can find. I wish I had twenty bucks for every article – often within the IT field – that blames IT for any failure that involves technology. It’s as if there can’t be failures in leadership, management, process, etc. The more CIO’s cower to this myth, the more the myth perpetuates itself. Popular or not, a myth is still a myth.

I’d like to add a postulate to your law…When IT fails it’s usually not the sign of a (technology) disease, but a symptom of a larger problem (within the organization). Great companies capitalize on that awareness and take the actions necessary to right the ship. Mediocre ones just keep blaming IT.
