The Key to Viral is Burst

Consumed => “The Curious Nature of Sharing Cascades on Facebook” on MIT Technology Review.

=> My value add (i.e., left a comment)…

Correct me if I’m wrong but this “algorithm” is as much a function of the FB algorithm, as it is about the nature of the photos themselves. For example, it’s mentioned that burst (i.e., how fast an image spreads) is a better signal for predicting the future.

Well, and pardon my snarkiness, raise your hand if you think FB likes to promote less popular content. The point being, FB and the like want to increase engagement, and that “trend” tends to make the rich even richer, so to speak. Correct? So to say that a burst is good for predicting future viral-ness leads me to reply with, “#Duh”.

Or am I missing something here?
