The good, the bad & the hosted e-commerce ugly

FYI => I’ve been doing some pre-sales discovery on hosted e-commerce platforms. This opportunity came my way a couple weeks ago and with the follow-up meeting on the horizon I figured I’d  share a bit on what I’ve found so far. was a hosted solution that had come up in previous discussions. But I needed some additional reference points so I naturally tapped Quora. That cream of that question crop came back with and Did I mention that I love Quora?

All three offer an extensive feature set at what amounts to a ridiculous price. In 1999 I paid about $7,000 to have a very basic shopping cart custom built and that didn’t even have credit card processing. Considering what these sites provide for what comes down to a couple cases of beer—or less!—per month and on a month to month basis (read: no massive up front investment) is just amazing to me.

Of these three, at the moment I’m favoring Big Commerce. Volusion doesn’t support Google Analytic E-commerce. Which I find very surprising. Big Commerce says their suppose for GA E-comm is kind of in beta (i.e., it’s not 100%). That doesn’t make me happy but at least they’re honest and are apparently working on it. And last and least, I have not heard back from Shopify on a question I submitted this past Saturday. Not good. Volusion’s live chat was helpful. Big Commerce has been very responsive via email, although I do wish they too had live chat.

I’m excited about the possibly of getting back into e-commerce. Those where the good ol’ days, as they say.
