The future of book publishing

Consumed => “Are Apps The Future of Book Publishing?” by Alex Knapp on Forbes.

Interesting ideas. But like everything there’s a time and place. The primary question seems to be, is a book still a book if it is no longer a book? And while the idea of “enhancements” is nice is there anything as vivid as the human imagination? Do we need sound effects to have the crap scared out of us by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-tale Heart”? Is Hollywood coming to the book business? Please say it isn’t so.

Hyperlink-esque access to info that adds depth and satisfies curiosity makes sense. But enhancements for the sake of enhancements would certainly be an unwelcome improvement. Unfortunately, the book industry is driven by sales and not necessarily quality. If such enhancements increase sales and margins then hold onto your paper hats. At the same time be prepared for an eventual  new wave of content authors who wish to explore the artistic side of this new medium.
