The difference between alchemy and mediocrity

FYI => I want to share a (paraphrased) conversation I had yesterday with an esteemed colleague. Let’s just say that there’s a reason  innovative ideas are hard to come by.

In general, we were talking QR Codes, responsive websites and UX…

Me: I have this idea to try to do a 480 wide site in a full browser.
PU: Why? (in a semi-disgusted tone.)
Me: Why not? I think it would be an interesting experiment, a challenge if you will.
PU: That’s stupid.
Me: Why is trying to offer a consistent screen-size independent UX stupid?
PU: Because experience is dictated by screen size and if you have more screen you should use it.
Me: Use it,  why? Just because it’s there? Why can’t the experience be distilled to the point of being universal and independent?
PU: Well, I’ve never seen it done. It would be stupid.
Me: Well, using your logic why don’t you use the full the 1600 wide when it’s available?
PU: Well, um.
Me: So this 480 in a full browser, you’ve never tried it?
PU: No.
Me: And you’ve never seen it done.
PU. Never.
Me: So that makes it stupid?
PU: It just doesn’t make sense. Why?
Me: So even as a challenge and an experiment you’re dismissing it as stupid?
PU: Yes. It would be stupid.

Let me just add that this colleague is well educated. She/he graduated from a highly respected undergrad program, as well as a masters from an Ivy league school.

Don’t get me wrong. The idea of sticking to max-width:480px in a full-browser was out of the ordinary. But stupid? As a challenge and/or experiment? I think not.

It’s a sad day in America  when pushing the envelop is stupid. The correct answer was, “That’s an interesting idea. I’ve never seen that done. I wonder what it would take to pull it off. Let’s talk about it…”
