“A republic works better when we make the extra effort to engage with a variety of points of view.”

Truth be told, I’m not flag waving Google fan. Agreed, they do some great things. Do I trust them? Not any more than I trust anyone / anything that is motivated by – and legally bound to pursue – profit. That being said, to blame Google for people’s laziness is addressing the symptom and not the problem. With rights also comes associated responsibilities. The fact is the (American) people have been shedding their responsibilities for years. It’s not Google’s or Facebook’s fault that there are citizens with the right to vote who elect not to be fully informed. It’s not reasonable to expect people who are acting mindlessly to engage in a sufficient level of thought.

My point is, it’s not the political system, it’s the electorate. It’s not the internet based platform, it’s the users. If individuals – who by definition are the building blocks of a society – are not going to be held accountable then they will act as such. There are plenty of studies that support this facet of human nature. Google, Facebook, etc. are doing what they are supposed to do. That is, meet a need in the market. If that need didn’t exist then that level of uber-power would be forced to retreat. Google and Facebook are simply filling a void, not creating it. We have free will. We have choice. But it is we who choose to be sucked into the matrix and remain blind.

Or put another way, I suggest reading Carne Ross’ “The Leaderless Revolution.” He might not be spot on all the time but it’s damn close most of it. It’s time for responsibility and accountability to come back to where it belongs…with each one of us. Outsourcing such things to Google, Facebook, Uncle Sam, etc. and expecting better results is where the real evil begins.
