Self-control is not the same as discipline

Consumed => “The Skill that Matters Most” by Tony Schwartz on HBR.

=> My value add (i.e., left a comment)…

At the risk of parsing words, self-control is not the same as discipline. Given your stipulation for, “despite the difficulty of a given challenge,” and “the ability to delay gratification,” then that sounds like discipline. A football coach doesn’t congratulate the team for self-control.

In addition, while rituals might be a great buzzword, what we really need here is the more basic…habits. Habits are for the most part unconscious and happen with little if any thought. While rituals imply a sense of effort and ceremony. If I were placing a bet, I’d put my money on habits and not rituals.

None the less, good stuff Tony. Always a pleasure.
