However, I believe there’s one caveat that continues to be missed in such conversations. That is, raw search stats is (often?) not synonymous with intention to buy.

There is a lot of searching that goes on for a lot of reasons. Just because “widget” has an estimate number of searches of one million (for example) does not necessarily mean the “target market” for widget purchasers is one million. In fact, it’s quite possible that a keyword with a smaller target could translate into a more “qualified leads”. The short of it is, ranking higher isn’t the object as much as attracting better is.

Agree, this stuff helps. But understanding the context and limits of such strategies and tools is essential to getting maximum results.
