Quora Downvote and Facebook Like…meaningless

Answered => “If my answer gets voted down on Quora, what emotions should I feel?” on Quora.

=> My answer…

The Quora downvote is much like the Facebook Like – it’s useless. While Quota does have context (i.e., the upvote) and FB does not, the anonymous nature of the Quora downvote devalues it quite a bit.

When other kids criticized me in school mum always said “Consider the source.” Here you can’t do that. So at this point all you know is that someone moved the pointer, hovered over the downvote icon arrow and clicked. That’s it.

You should also consider that it’s all about timing. Look at it this way: Of the people who saw the question, opened it, saw your comment, read it, there is some small subset who clicked on the downvote icon. Ten minutes to the left or to the right and that person might not have seen nor done so. In some regards this event is very close to random. Like a bird pooping on your car :)

It really doesn’t make sense to invest any emotion equity in such a meaningless action.
