My meta titles…what the Google is going on?!?!?

Asked => “Why and when has Google abandoned displaying a page’s meta title when that page appears in a SERP?” on Quora.

=> The rest of my question…

A couple weeks ago we noticed that Google was appending additional words to the line in the SERP that had traditional been the page’s meta title. Yesterday we saw instances where the page’s meta title was being replaced entirely by something Google came up with. Further investigation revealed that the replacement meta title was search term-centric. That is, the “meta title” derived by Google for a given page displayed in a SERP would change depending on the search term&mdash-as if the page had multiple meta titles.

Needless to say, it’s hard analyze click-thrus and manage page improvements if you don’t even know what was being displayed in the SERP for that page.

Feel free to answer here or on Quora. Thanks.
