I’d make my core site a blog. A handful of static pages with the blog being the primary way to push out ongoing activity. For example, a sample of a new song is a blog post. Photos from a gig – with the slideshow from Flickr or similar to give you some “SEO” exposure – is a blog post. Anything/everything that wants/needs to be shared with the fan base gets pushed out via the centralized blog.

The hub approach is essential to avoid the MySpace Syndrome. Which might be replaced by the Facebook Syndrome. Of course such platforms are important. But there are quite a few brands/bands who have been stranded by putting all their eggs in the MySpace basket. Is Facebook too big to fail? I think it’s safe to say that nothing is too big to fail. And Wall Street didn’t have Google+ in the rear view mirror, eh?

In terms of what blogging platform, my preference is self-hosted WordPress. Establish that as your hub.  If you’re interested I  have some WP bookmarks on Diigo (, as does my “work stream” website (

I think the big plus about WordPress is that it can get you launched fairly quickly. Yet it’s still powerful and flexible in terms of growth and evolution for going forward. Therefore,  what you add to that core hub *in order to meet the expectation of fans* will be up to you. Soundcloud? A presence on Bandcamp? There are tons of possibilities and fans are typically willing to give their 2 cents (even when not asked) as well. Listen to their input, it will often be pretty helpful.

As a side note, while there are plenty of plugins for automating that push-out (from WP to SM) but be mindful of your analytics and measuring. The better you can trace back visits to posts/articles the better. For example did post X draw more clicks on FB or Twitter? Most “social media gurus” and social media automation plugins ignore measuring/analytics. While you don’t have to be as obsessive as I’m suggesting it is important to understand effectiveness, etc. Don’t run too fast and too lose without having some data in hand. You data is another component that will help you understand if you’re making followers/fans happy.
