While the WP plug-in and this hack are exclusive to the WordPress blogging platform, the concept itself is universal. Call me stupid but I wasn’t aware of that meta tags.

I also think it might be possible to put images in the header but position them off the page with CSS. Don’t quote me on that. It just seems doubtful Facebook & Co are going to bother to interpret the CSS.
