Is there a God of design?
Answered => “How do you measure your ROI from design investment?” on Quora.
=> My answer…
This question might be up there with: “What is the meaning of life?” and “Is there a God?” Great to ask. Wonderful to ponder. Difficult, and perhaps impossible to arrive at a definitive objective answer.
Perhaps it’s time we admit this?
Design isn’t a new desk. (Although a new desk can be designed.) Design isn’t a business unit. There’s no X dollars going in and Y dollar coming out (or not).
Design is more omnipotent.
It’s much closer to perfume / cologne than earrings / wristwatch.
Perhaps it’s time we admit this as well?
Mind you, I’m not suggesting that money should be tossed blindly at design. Such a suggestion would be unreasonable and irresponsible. What I am suggesting is that for Project Z some sort of design will be required. It’s going to take time and effort. Well, then you might as well get it right. Often it seems to take more effort to do something wrong then right. One would also be wise to consider Opportunity Cost, yes?
In the world of business, design is an part of a holistic whole, not an arbitrary vertical slice to which a dollar sign must be attached.
If design were featured in a MasterCard advert, it would be the priceless bit :)
I’m not sure if I’ve answered your question, but I do hope I’ve provoked some discussion – which is what this answer was designed to do.
btw, thanks for the Asked to Answer.
