Is it important, or just new and semi-interesting?

Answered => “Why do many websites use relative timestamps?” on Quora.

=> My answer…

Allow me to play the contrarian…

In many cases (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, etc) it creates a faux sense of importance. I think it’s safe to assume the idea was A/B tested. My guess is that relative time was found to be “more engaging.” I would guess it also creates a sense of urgency to post. And thus why there’s so much fodder, if not shite flying around.

Mind you, I’m not dismissing Martin’s response. I just suspect there’s a heavy dose of human psychology that plays into this answer as well.
