In defense of Marissa Meyer

Consumed => “How WordPress Thrives with a 100% Remote Workforce” by Scott Berkun on Harvard Business Review.

=> My value add (i.e., left a comment)…

1) Moi? I feel the Marissa Mayer (Yahoo) reference is mostly apples v oranges. It is, as you said about culture. Specifically, Yahoo needs to shake things up, refactor and carry on. The status quo isn’t going to cut it under their current circumstances. Her “All hands on deck” isn’t an ends. It’s a means.

2) Speaking of means v ends…Tools (along with culture), they make a difference. Organizations who believe that email is a collaboration tool – and there are plenty of such outfits – are under prepared (to put it kindly). Expecting the status quo, but from remote, isn’t a reasonable expectation. Put another way, you don’t get optimal results from known sub-optimal means.
