IBM’s Watson to compete on Jeopardy

Consumed => “Inside Watson, IBM’s Jeopardy Computer” by Doug Henschen on InformationWeek.

What’s not in the online version of the article (but is in the print) is:

Watson is a workload-optimized system purposely built to play Jeopardy. It runs on 10 racks of IBM Power 750 Servers, standard hardware that’s readily available. The total machine operates at 80 tereflops…”

While such technology is amazing. What’s too often taken for granted (i.e., it’s not new and sexy) is the depth and breadth of the human species. Watson is being developed to do what is essentially one specific task and that’s it. I’m not belittling IBM’s accomplishments, as much as noting Watson can’t cook a meal, ride a bike, show empathy or pull up his own zipper.

I’m not saying IBM won’t get there. I’m simply noting that in a way it’s only reinventing the wheel.
