Honestly, I haven’t read anything on that specifically. I’m sure there’s something somewhere, I just never bumped into it. That being said, let’s face it, Google has a M.O. for these things (some of which overlap):

– There wasn’t sufficient demand for Google’s version of the product/service.
– The industry wasn’t ready or receptive to Google’s “improvements”.
– Incumbent industry leaders responded to Google’s entry such that Google’s product/service wasn’t as attractive.
– What looks like an exit might be a fallback and regroup.
– There’s been a broader change in Google’s strategy such that what once looked attractive to them no longer fits.

Could be a bit of all five, yes?
