Fact: Every Project has Context

Consumed => “Why You Should Include Your Developer In The Design Process” by Paul Boag on Smashing Magazine.

=> My value add (i.e., left a comment)…

Fact: With rare exception every project has context. Included in context is budget; both time and hard dollars.

So it’s not a matter of “infeasible ideas” per se (i.e., “But we need developers not only to block infeasible ideas.”) That is, with rare exception, anything is possible. As in, “Anything is possible. Do you have your cheque book handy?”

Finally, I’ve said this before and I’m sure I’ll say it again:

“Design without consideration for manufacturing is not design; it’s art.”

Unfortunately, based on what I’ve experienced (and heard from others), this is not something they teach in design school. To put it bluntly, more designers need to be mindful that most clients / project aren’t paying for art. If you can’t do great design within the context at hand, then it’s probably time to consider another career. For example, say, artist.
