Client: Apps4Rent – Good news and more good news

FYI => The Apps4Rent for rent makeover/makeunder is progressing page by page. Also on deck to launch today is a new product, Hosted Desktop (aka Virtual Desktop).

First, here’s the screen grab of the before look:

Now here’s where it’s at today:

Please keep in mind that this is not a CMS driven site. There is quite a bit of dirty and sloppy legacy code and markup. I’m doing the best I can with the cards we’ve got to fix what I can when and where I can in the time alloted. Furthermore, design and user experience is not exactly at the top of the client’s list of priorities. Their model is driven by SEO. Naturally, they are very conscious of any major changes in terms of content and structure. Also, keep in mind their target is mostly IT types so too-slick might actually be a turnoff.

Keeping all this context in mind, I think the new website design is positive and refreshing. The revamp of the logo, the header and the left column all add to a more appealing experience. Results (read: visits and sales) have been trending upward since the new look was put in place a couple+ weeks back.

As for Hosted Desktop, ideally a couple of those pages will launch today. I took the initiative to do some restructuring to the .php and .tpl files. Paired with that, I’m gutting the page markup (in the main content area) and developing an improved set of templates and process for going forward. Not only will this make the site more flexible and easier to maintain but more importantly, the markup is going to be much more crawler/bot friendly. Again, anything that is pro-SEO they are in favor of. On top of this I’m enhancing the design and layout strategy with the hope of getting the Hosted Desktop pages to convert more often.

Finally, I am also responsible for writing the copy for the Hosted Desktop pages. In that role, as that process progresses, I work closely with one of the owners on SEO, keywords, headline tags and intra-site links. Actually, I’ve done plenty of copywriting on the current site as well. It’s not always Shakespeare but it’s always SEO friendly and that’s the top priority.

Basically, they’ve made the site my baby and raise it I will. Higher and higher! Notch by notch!!
