Joe makes reference to team recognition not being rocket science. I believe he’s right. However, the problem seems to be in the culture—there’s that C Word again—created by leadership and management in recognizing the need for recognition. Catch 22 anyone?

One must also be mindful of what types of behaviors the incentives are going to encourage. For example, if the measurement is time on call, and the benchmark is less is more, then don’t be surprised if customers are not fully served properly.

To foreshadow all this, start by creating a culture based on agility and flexibility. Frequent and endless evolution could be perceived by some as lack of direction and focus. That’s probably not the “vibe” you want. Therefore, cultivate a culture where small incremental improvements and the willingness to experiment is the status quo.

Incentives and awards are tools for creating the optimal context/culture. Amen.
