A PhD in Angry Birds?

Consumed => “Harvard and M.I.T. Team Up to Offer Free Online Courses” by Tamar Lewin on NY Times.

“What faculty don’t want to do is just take something off the shelf that’s somebody else’s and teach it, any more than they would take a textbook, start on Page 1, and end with the last chapter,” said Lawrence S. Bacow, a past president of Tufts who is a member of the Harvard Corporation and a visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

What rubbish. Imagine if your doctor said, “Sorry, I didn’t invent that procedure so I’m not going to use.” Or what if your dentist said, “Industry standards? Ha! Are you kidding me? We just make it up as we go.” The teacher is the means. The student is the ends. Not the other way around.

That aside, it’s clear to me that we are no longer a culture of haves and have-nots. We’re tipping towards wants and want-nots. In other words, do you want an education and to better your station, or would you prefer to waste your days away playing Angry Birds?
