10 tips on landing pages

A couple of thoughts to add:

6) I think it’s worth adding that Google uses bounce rates in its various algorithms. In other words, being deceptive today will only lead to pain tomorrow.

7) Page load speed is a deal killer. For WordPress/Drupal types be mindful of how many of your plugins use API that have to wait on drawing content from other sites. Optimize your images. Use Smush.it or similar when possible.

8) Similar to #1 above, not meeting expectations to a no-no. For example, if the visitor expects “innovative” and “techie” or “professional” and the design of your site/landing page is not that and circa 2006 then you’re doomed. It always amazes me how many people devoted an excessive amount of time to invite guests over (i.e., SEO, SEM, social media, etc.) and their house is a mess. Consider a makeover before you try to lure bees with what tends to draw flies. Know that I mean?

9) In nearly all cases your home page is not a landing page. There are far too many brands still using, “See our website for more details” and linking to their home page. NO! I don’t want to visit your #@%^!website. I want to be taken to the page that is relevant to the topic, sale item, etc. you shared with me. My time is valuable. If you don’t respect that then you’ve already lost me.

10) Finally, it’s about them not you. Use of empathy is the best marketing tool money can buy. It’s certainly true when it comes to laying out and designing landing pages as well.
